Up for bids is an original 1864 Civil War soldier's bible. The inside of the bible has a note on what to do if he dies in battle. The inside of the bible is Id'd to " LIEUTENANT G. M. EICHELBERGER". Here is what I could make out.Lieutenant G M Eichelberger Co D 6th Md. Regt ?2nd Brig 3rd? Should I die in battle please inform my brother m. g. Eichelberger residing in Grace-ham Frederick county Maryland-where he remains close? April 3rd 1865 South Side Rail Road ?
. The 6th Maryland took part in many battles. What is interesting is the date is April 3rd when the 6th Maryland went on pursuit of General Robert E. Lee and his Army. The 6th Maryland were at the Surrender of Appomattox Court House April 9th. This bible would have been carried in action and would have been at the surrender.
The writing is somewhat light although still legible.
The bible is right out of the woodwork from a very old estate. The bible is in decent condition. The binding and pages are in good shape, still connected. Overall a very unique Id'd personal Civil War relic. Please feel free to email any questions.
