Antique English Copelands Berry Bowl, Exquisite Leaf Design
Copelands of England made this exquisite berry bowl. There is a finely scalloped gilt border. The white area next to the border is gently ridged. There are hand painted violets faced along the perimeter, complemented by a violet in the center of the bowl. The central violet on a white background is set off by a gilt frame. Around the center is a leaf design in palest green with a wonderfully textured surface. The leaf is edged in gilt enameling. The diameter is 5.5 inches. On the back we can clearly read the marks, "Copelands" and "England". This mark was used starting in 1891. The year before, in 1890, the U. S. started requiring imported porcelain to bear the name of the country of origin-in this case, "England". Beginning in 1914 the U. S. began requiring "Made in England" on imports from that country. With these brackets we can date the berry bowl between 1891-1914, so it is more than a century old.
