Description
This is a beautiful English Earthenware antique open soup tureen on a pedestal base made by W. T. Copeland & Sons.Based on the information I could find, the printed mark on the bottom dates it to c. 1867-90
The pattern is butterflies, flowers and birds. I think it may be considered Japonisme in it's style.
This piece really is exquisite. The colors are beautiful. The scalloped edges make it very elegant the there is amazing detail.
The color is a pale yellow/ivory with gold accents. I believe this is also considered transferware.
I found no chips or cracks, but you can feel the "pock-marks" both in the form of tiny holes and bubbles. It is clear these were there when the piece was created, not caused after.
The colors on the butterflies, flowers and bird is just exceptional.
The sides are ribbed with a scalloped edge.
Absolutely stunning and in fantastic shape for its age.
It is approx 13" long - including the handles and 4" tall.
The marks on the bottom are pictured. Please see photos. One is the mark of WT Copeland & Sons; there is a red mark that looks like 1/684; then there are two separate embossed marks. They are harder to read, but one looks like Copeland and the other is a crest with the letter R - I believe.
This piece was among items that belonged to my husband's mother who was born in the 1930's. I wish I knew it's history prior to her owning it.
