Description
The Hotel Captain Cook opned in Anchorage, Alaska in 1965 and was named after Captain James Cook, a British explorer who traveled the world as well as mapped the coastline of Alaska on his final voyage in the late 1770s. Walter Hickel, former governor of Alaska, erected the first tower of Hotel Captain Cook and today, his son continues to oversee the hotel as well as other investments. The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America. The coffee cup stands 2 1/4 inches tall. Nicely backstamped with both the hotel's as well as the designer's name. Arthur Morgan was a well known designer in the Washington area in the 1950s and 1960s. He designed houses and commercial buildings as well. Mayer China manufactured this cup in 1968, shortly after the hotel opened. It features a shield consisting of a sailing ship, bear, seal, sextant, stars and more. The saucer is plain white with gold trim and measures 6 inches in diameter. No chips or cracks on the cup but there is wear to the gold trim on both pieces. The saucer has a crow's foot crack on the bottom which doesn't go through. Please see last picture. Please see my other listings for matching pieces for this historic hotel. Thanks for looking!
