Description
1863 Civil War Token with nautical carving on the coin's reverse side. This evidently began as a New York City Staudinger Union Shield 1863 Civil War token. But, here's the rub. The reverse has been smoothed and etchings or hand engraving has been applied to minutely depict a horse, a rampant dragon with a sword, an anchor, a center X crossed by either a hatchet or line intersecting a triangle, then there is a small sailing ship, and the other device is either a perched eagle or a bear claw, undecided. This is an intriguing item. Is it the work of a bored Civil War sailor, or perhaps an ID disc from a secret society, or a piece of Native American art. Attic find in coastal South Carolina, formerly on display in the nautical section of the South Carolina Civil War Museum. We
