Civil War leather Confederate or Southern militia cartridge box. Brown leather, single stitched with the scalloped edge to the outer flap. The box also contains its lunate interior flap over the implemented pouch with the tab closure. The brass finial is still present and is the flat topped style. The roller buckles are long gone. The verticle belt loops are still present on the back and stitched. The box is sound and the stitching is still tight. The leather is still supple with some cracking and crazing here and there, but no tears. Both leather ears on the side of the inner flap are still present. It almost looks as if some words or even a name was carved on the inside of the outer flap, but I cannot quite make out anything legible or anything that makes sense with my own eyes. Two holes are present on the top of the flap as if a plate once accompanied the box - possibly a state plate or even a CS oval. I cannot give a definitive answer on that though. This box was once part of a prominent Confederate collection from a South Carolina estate that went to auction a few years ago. It has also been in the possession of two prominent and well-known CW dealers which I know personally. I will disclose this information to the winning bidder. Please see pictures for condition as I have tried to document all I can. Selling as is and as I've acquired it and will ship USPS Priority.
