    Description

    USA SALES ONLY.  SORRY.
THIS IS A HAND BLOWN CIVIL WAR ERA GLASS SYRINGE.
THIS MEDICAL INSTRUMENT WAS USED IN THE APPLICATION OF POWDERS TO TREAT VENEREAL AND OTHER DISEASES IN WOMEN. THESE SYRINGES WERE ALSO USED IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA FOR BIRTH PREVENTION, WHERE ACIDIC SOLUTIONS AND ANTISEPTIC SPERMICIDES WERE INJECTED. SUCH SYRINGES ALSO FUNCTIONED FOR DOUCHE APPLICATION. SOME RESEARCH INDICATES THAT SYRINGES OF THIS SIZE WERE ALSO USED AS PART OF EXPERIMENTAL FEEDING THROUGH A PATIENT'S RECTUM.
GLASS WAS USED BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT REACT WITH POWDERS SUCH AS SILVER NITRATE OR THE MENTIONED ACIDIC AND ANTISEPTIC SOLUTIONS WHICH WERE DISPENSED THROUGH THE SYRINGE'S 4 SMALL SPACED OPENINGS.
THE SYRINGE IS APPROX. 10" LONG WITH THE PLUNGER INSIDE.
PLUNGER IS ALSO MADE OF GLASS BUT THE GASKET (TYPICALLY A WOUND COTTON TWINCE) IS MISSING, LIKELY BECAUSE OF USE OF THE VARIOUS CITED FLUIDS AND POWDERS WHICH ADVERSELY AFFECTED THE MATERIAL.
AS SHOWN, IT HAS A GLASS END HANDLE
