    Description

This is a Civil War soldier's gutta percha (thermoplastic) match safe, used to keep matches dry and usable.
It includes three period matches, or "Lucifers."
The match safe is made of gutta percha, a thermoplastic latex which was first used in the 1850s for many products (photo cases was one of the most popular).
The match safe opens on a hinge on both ends, and there is a ribbed area along the side for striking the matches.  Both hinges work well, and the sides close securely.
The match safe measures 2¾ inches by 1½ inches by ½ inch.
Keeping matches dry was a vital necessity for soldiers, and this match safe is an essential addition to any Civil War Soldier's display.
