    Description

McClellan, Burnside On Heels Of Stonewall Jackson
The 11th Vermont Volunteers was a three-year regiment who were engaged at Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the first Battle of Weldon Railroad, Fort Stevens, Charlestown, Gilbert’s Ford, Winchester, Fisher Ill and Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and in the Siege of Petersburg.
    WAR-DATE,  Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4 1/2 X 7 1/2, written by Pvt. Frederic S. Hunt, Co. K, 11th Vermont Vols. (later the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery), [n. p., n. d., but Fort Lincoln, Washington], ca. Sept. 1862], to his sister.
In part: "…I can not write any [?] that wrote to Sam…We are all rather ugly down here…We have plenty enough to do…a plenty of shoveling…but we all know how to do it. We are making preparations for an attack…We have got a pretty good place to give it to them so let them come. You need not be at all frightened at what I wrote…I feel we were all safe here yet. We have plenty of rebels around but they had better keep rather cool…Half of the city of Washington are rebels but it averages five regiments a day so [the] Secesh will have to come to an end…We can hear the cannons roar…There is fighting somewhere…It is…some ways off. It is said the rebels mean to go into Baltimore…Old [Stonewall] Jackson is going towards Baltimore and…they saw Gen. McClellan and Burnside were tight to his heels. They mean to cut off his retreat…
Direct to Co. K, 11th Regt. VT. Vol, Washington, D. C…they say that the tenth has gone to Arlington Heights…Fred. S. Hunt."
    Very light toning, else excellent.
