Description
This hand made crutch is most definitely Civil War period. I bought it many years ago from a dealer friend who bought it out of a house in southern Maryland. The crutch is quite unique and certainly made by a craftsman. It has a hand carved birdseye maple armpit rest with an old leather covered pad on top. The shaft I believe is hickory although I am not sure. It is square at the top and in mortised in and pinned the the top piece. It is square for the first 8 inches and then it becomes round and tapers down to the bottom. Crutch measures 46" long. It looks like at some time in its life it had some sort of ferrule on the bottom which is now gone. The shaft is worn very smooth and shiny where the users hand would grip the crutch as it was used.
