Description
This is a pre-Civil War period large silver spoon that remains in excellent condition. The upper side of the end of the flat handle is lightly engraved with the letter “M”. The underside of the end is with the touch mark, “J. McFARLANE” within a square. The very tip of the underside of the handle is hand engraved with letters, “M.” over “R.L.” and over the dates “1814 -1916”. This engraving was apparently added by the family in the early 20th Century. The spoon measures 9 inches in length with the deep bowl 1⅞ inches across. The weight is ?? There is damage to this spoon, and it is an extremely fine example that is in excellent condition.J. Mc Farlane was an American silversmith in Salem, Maine c. 1790 and Boston, Maine from 1796-1813.
