EXTREMELY RARE Civil War CONFEDERATE OFFICER'S HAVERSACK, Brought Home by Col. George Burnham, 1st Conn. Inf.
    DESCRIPTION:
,Extremely rare, unusual original Civil War CONFEDERATE HAVERSACK.
Made out of tarred canvas, with lining. It is a r
are style with 2 separate pockets. Primary one is lined with blue satin. LINING IS STILL COMPLETE!!! Second pocket is smaller, and is simply a smaller strip of canvas w/flap stitched to the front of the haversack body. Edged with a fine border, much of it still remaining. Haversack shape is nice, with rounded corners on the bottom. I have included a variety of photos for your reference. The first picture shows the front with both flaps open. Quite a variety of angles shown after that.
In decent condition for its age and scarcity. Stitching around body is sound and intact, and only loose in one upper corner. A few inches of the stitching in the center of the small front pouch is loose, but can be repaired. Leather shoulder straps, and closing strap are tightly stitched to the bag, although not complete. It has leather belt loops on the back, BOTH OF WHICH ARE INTACT.  The belt would go through these, to keep it close to the body and prevent flapping. I have always left it as it was found. I'm sure it would be a suitable candidate for some professional restoration if desired.
This is the type of haversack shown to be used by Confederate officers.
This was brought back from the Civil Was as a war souvenir by George S. Burnham, Colonel of the 1st Connecticut Vol. Infantry. This was found in his attic along with his ow haversack marked 1st Conn. Vols.
The 1st Conn was a 3 month regiment that left Hartford on April 21, 1861, returning July 31, 1861. THE 1st CONN. performed a variety of guard duties around Washington, THEN FOUGHT AT 1st BULL RUN, LED BY COLONEL BURNHAM. Burnham also was commissioned Colonel of the 22nd Conn. Vols, a 9 month regiment, in Sept. 1862. He also was commissioned into the US VOLUNTEERS QUARTERMASTER'S DEPT. in May 1864 until the end of the war.
Comes with a notebook containing a picture of him and all enlistment information and service records, etc. Also contains regimental history details. A GREAT ATTRIBUTED CONFEDERATE SOUVENIR ITEM. Possibly picked up on 1st BULL RUN BATTLEFIELD!!!
This is a great item to include in a variety of collections or displays. It measures 14" wide x about 11 1/2" high overall. Front flap is about 2" long. Front pouch is the same width x 7 1/2" to the top of the 2 3/4" flap.
Would be a great item for a variety of collections as well as for a serious CONFEDERATE ITEM COLLECTOR. You will not see many of these available for sale.
I have had this many years ago, and got it from his great grandson, Russ Burnham. He was colonel of the 1st Conn Inf in one of the early re-enactment regiments, in which I also was a member.
    This
would make a great addition to ANY GENERAL CIVIL WAR COLLECTION OR DISPLAY. WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT DECORATOR ON A WALL, OVER A FIREPLACE, in a living room, family room, Man Cave, or office, etc.
Any original Civil War haversack is rare and desirible, but a 2-pouch Confederate one is almost unheard of!!! SOMETHING UNUSUAL AND SPECIAL FOR YOUR COLLECTION!
