    Description

    Up for bid is a rare Confederate numbered enfield buttplate. This buttplate was once attached to a Confederate imported enfield rifle---and the numbers matched the bayonet and the ramrod. What makes this piece so rare is that it has a small hand engraved 269 and letter B---meaning that this was in the third and final shipment of enfield to the Confederacy---sometime in late 1862. Based on historical research, there are only about 20 B suffix enfield rifles still known to exist---making them the rarest of the three groups. I have been collecting numbered Confederate enfield items for over 20 years and this is the first relic B Suffix buttplate that I have seen. The buttplate is in fantastic shaoe with very minor ground action and has retained its original shape. This relic was found on private property with the permission of the landowner.
