Excellent 1864 US Sanitary Commission Medal: Great Central Fair , Philadelphia. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS First Class. This original 1864 heavy( 38oz.) bronze  medal was stuck during the Civil War and presented to benefactors of the efforts of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War.Diameter of medal is 2.25' Pictorial on obverse show a sick or wounded soldier being ministered to by Surgeon who is being assisted by a mythical female figure holding a cup of nectar in one hand and a cornucopia in the other.Marked: "Schussele Inv" and " Paquet. F." Around the perimeter it is struck : " We Give Our Wealth For Those Who Gave Their Health for Us" On the verso, it states, "in Commemoration of the Great Central Fair/ For The /U.S. Sanitary Commission/ Held At / Philadelphia / 1864Condition : Excellent - There are no  spots on the medal or any damage to its rim  .Please carefully examine the photos of medal to determine its condition.
The Great Central Fair - !864History:The Great Central Fair took place from June 7 until June 28 0f 1864 in the Logan Circle park in Philadelphia. . It was inspired by past sanitary fairs that happened throughout the United States to raise funds for the United States Sanitary Commission.The main exhibit building was 200,000 square fetid size.There was also Union Street which was 540 feet long and ran in the middle of the fair. Union Street was compared to a cathedral. Inside the main building were "departments " with different themes. Themes included the neighboring states of New Jersey and Delaware, themes about corn and sewing, a restaurant and parlor, as well as weaponry, fine art, curiosities,transportationand children's subjects. On June 16, Abraham Lincoln And his fsmily visted the fair. He donated 48 copies of the Emancipation Proclamation at $ 10 a book. They were all authorgraphed by Lincoln. The festival raised over $ 1 million   (Wikipedia)_
