DRAGOONS REGT, BATTLE DAMAGED DRAGOON HOLSTERS, 1845,/1847,BATTLE OF MOLINO DEL REY,1847
This pair of dragoon saddle pommel holsters were used in the Mexican War by Sergeant Major, Brevet 2
    nd
    & 1
    st
. Lieutenants Arthur Tree when he served on the staff of Colonels William Harney & David Twiggs of the 2
    nd
Dragoons Regiment.                   He was part Seminole Indian & was well versed in tracking & scouting crafts so was a good fit into the new dragoons in the United States Army.
    He was with the 2
    nd
Dragoons during the occupation of Texas on July 31, 1845 & fought in the following battles: Polo Alta, Resaca de la Palma, Matamoros, Monterrey, Santa Rosa Pass, Cerro Gordo, & at Molino del Rey where he was wounded on September 8, 1847.
It was again used by Private & Sergeant Joseph Tree when he served in McBrides Company of Florida Indian Scouts from November,1862 to May 1865.                                He fought at the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864.
Each holster is 13 ¾” long with a pouch & flap on the front near the top to hold 5 cartridges in copper tubes.                                                                                                                         Sergeant Major/ Lieutenant Arthur Tree’s initials A D T was in the leather under the flap that holds the cartridges in holster # 1.                                                                         Sergeant Joseph Tree’s initials J T are in the leather under the flap that holds the cartridges on holster # 2
The holsters are joined together by a 7” x 5” leather strap that was damaged when Lieutenant Tree was wounded at Molino del Ray.
Sticking out from the top on each holster is a 4 ½” leather strap
There is an old repair to the back that used a pair of 12 7/8: leather straps to help hold the holsters together.                                                                                                                  The front flaps are missing on both holsters as is 2 of the brass tubes on one holster # 2.                                                                                                                                                They are in good & very well used condition with the leather good & stable as is most of the stitching.                                                                                                                                  It was bought directly from the Tree family in Williston, Florida & comes with a certificate of authenticity & historical research.
There are VERY few artifacts from Florida & they are seldom seen at Civil War or antique shows!
I have other artifacts from the Tree family not listed.
