Description
This handsome 1850 Batty soldier's powder flask is of heavy copper capped with brass and was used for a model 1844 Mississippi rifle. This was a popularly carried flask at the time, as it bears the famous Batty "Peace" symbol of two hands shaking surrounded by 20 stars, as seen on the Indian Peace Medals of the period. Above is a shield-breasted eagle with wings outstretched, arrows in his claws. Below is another shield bearing US, with banners, armor and weapons behind it. This patriotic design is the same on both sides. This piece made it through the Civil War and beyond with no verdigris or major denting. The illustrations are worn form repeated handling and there have been repairs to the loops and a seam underneath one. It is a large piece, measuring just over 9 1/4in long, 4in wide and 1 1/2in thick in the swell. It is amazing that after the violent turmoil of battle it is in such great condition. Whoever this solider was, with this powder flask by his side and hope in his heart, saw the dawn of weaponry never previously experienced by humanity. This historic piece will transport you back to the days when the United States was at war against itself, brother fighting brother, as hundreds of thousands followed the Underground Railroad to their hard-won freedom.
