Offered for Auction from a recent estate sale is the following:
ENLISTED MAN’S TIN  DRINKING/MESS CUP POSSIBLY MEXICAN WAR THROUGH CIVIL WAR ERA
This item is as found from an estate sale, untouched as photo show. My reasoning for suggesting that the Soldiers Drinking/Mess Cup is an early issue is due to the following article titled:  U.S. Army Field Mess Gear - Cups Prior to 1874, soldier’s cups came in a variety of shapes and sizes, although generally they were made of tinned iron and a single looped handle over the back seam.
The Infantry Equipment Board of 1874 recommended that the tinned iron cup be furnished by the Ordnance Department and issued the same as other ordnance-stores.  The cup was made of tinned iron with a rolled edge and a handle with rolled edges riveted over the back seam.  The distinctive feature of the cup over earlier patterns is the U.S. embossed on the top of the handle.  This cup would continue in use until the beginning of World War I.  This information came from an article titled U.S. Army Field Mess Gear by David C. Cole.
This Tin Mess Drinking cup possibly Military is designed without the U.S. Stamping and Rivets over the back soldered seam. The condition of this early Possibly Enlisted man’s Tin mess drinking cup is as follows, a dent on one side of the cup, 4 small holes on bottom of cup at point of rim connection to base, with solder on outside bottom of base where someone of the past century and a half tried to seal the base to the cup side.  This area is about an inch long. It appears as though it area may have been hit leaving a small dent which separated the two pieces.  The handle attached to the top of the cup has a small separation of solder on half of the cup, till solid on the other side of the cup. No rivets on the attachment of the handle only solder.  A couple of small areas with rust oxidation present on the exterior.  I have photographed the Tin Cup in direct sunlight which brings out the best and the worst of an item, hopefully the best in this situation.  There are a few areas of light surface rust mostly on the outside of the cup.
A rare survivor from possibly the Mexican War era through the Civil War period. The cup measures 4 5/8” inches in height and 4 1/8 “ inches in diameter.  The cups weight is 5.72 ounces.
