VERY NICE MID 19TH CENTURY/CIVIL WAR PERIOD ENGRAVED POWDER HORNSeveral years ago I bought at auction a grouping of antique powder horns including this mid 19th century/Civil War period powder horn. It is 8" in length and does have some small insect areas and small hairline crack in the spout; I would therefore rate the horn overall as Good+. The opening bid price takes into account condition; if there were no imperfections, this horn could easily go for 0 and more.
This powder horn has several interesting features. It has a nice decorative spout. As for the engraving, there are two engraved images. There is a nice shield with crossed anchors at the base. Of particular interest is the sailing ship also engraved on the powder horn. Given the "dots" seen near the deck of the ship, the sailing ship representation looks to be a warship. There is also an engraving of a musket, reinforcing this theme as a military vs. civilian powder horn.
There are many antique powder horns on the market, but engraved powder horns are definitely rarer than plain powder horns. This horn also benefits from the attractive shield and sailing ship themes on the horn.
30 day return guarantee as long as the powder horn is received in the same condition as sent. Mailing cost includes insurance and is based on domestic mailing; international mailing cost is based on destination and would be sent through Ebay's Global Shipping Program.
This will make a nice addition to several types of collections: a maritime focused collection that this powder horn has with anchors and sailing ship; a Civil War era collection including patriotic symbols such as anchor and shield and sailing ship that looks like a warship; and a collection of antique powder horns in general. And here's your chance to get a mid 19th century/Civil War era engraved powder horn at a reasonable price.
