Description
Note dated June 19, 1862, in which one Noah Funkhouser is trying to recoup money for supplies taken by Confederate forces operating in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He is writing to Henry Ridenour, and says that coffee, salt and other supplies he bought at the Mount Prospect Commissary were taken by "the Rebel Arme." A transcription of the note will be provided to the successful buyer.
NOTE: This note most likely reflects operations of the Confederate cavalry immediately after "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign. They were shielding his movement from the Valley to Gen. Lee's army, and this capture of supplies may have been part of the plan to draw attention away from Jackson.
Note measures 7.5 by 7.5 inches and is written in ink on lined note paper. It has received some damage squarely in the center (see photo), and has a hole that measures about 1.5 inches across. However, this damage (it may have come from fire) does not obscure either the contents of the note or the signatures.
