    Description

Rare Civil War Battle Flag Eagle Finial. 1800's.
This finial came from the Penn Estate in SW Ohio. The Penn Estate had 2 generations that served in the Civil War. The estate was later turned into a bed and breakfast, and had quite a few pieces ( from the civil war) that were passed on for generations before finally being liquidated due to being sold and turned back to a private residence.
The finial is hollow cored (pictured), and would have been by design to reduce weight. This would have been a battle finial due to the opening by the beak to hold a regiment banner (pictured). The guilding is long gone, however, the patina and detial is outstanding. There is a slight fracture in the right wing (pictured). It would be hard to imagine for a piece to not have some issues especially during that time of our country. I can only imagine the stories this bird could pass on. Thanks for looking.
