The Commodore Hotel NYC 1917 Vintage Silver Plated 10" Plate VanderbiltThe Commodore Hotel was named after Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. It started construction in 1917 and officially opened its doors in 1919. It was one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, located just east of Grand Central Station. It was purchased by the Trump organization in 1976, renovated and reopened in 1980 as the Grand Hyatt Hotel. In February 2019, it was announced that The Grand Hyatt Hotel was slated for demolition.
This is a 10" plate, unpolished.
It is top marked with a raised medallion of the letter "C" which was the Commodore's logo.
The back is marked with the name of the hotel and "1917." It has Gorham's maker's mark and their date mark of a sword, confirming 1917 as the date of manufacture. It has an approximate diameter of 10" inches.
What makes this piece so special is the fact that it was part of The Commodore's original silver service when it opened to the grandeur of New York City in 1919.
A practical and versatile piece of history.
