    Description

    54TH MASSACHUSETTS
.  Norwood Penrose Hallowell (1839-1914) was a Union officer who commanded the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first all-black unit in MA, following the death of Robert Gould Shaw during the famous charge on Fort Wagner.  Shortly thereafter, at the request of Governor John Albion Andrew, Hallowell recruited and commanded the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the second all-black unit in MA and sister regiment to the 54th. Before his involvement with the 54th and 55th, Hallowell fought with the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment at the Battles of Ball’s Bluff, Yorktown, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Chantilly, and Antietam, where he was wounded.
