    Description

US Navy copper cooking kettle. I bought this kettle from Mike Eckard in 1994. Mike had bought it in 1983 while in
    Raleigh
from Ms. Nancy Elmore from New Bern, North Carolina.  It was the second item I had bought from him. According to Mike this kettle came off the "Yankee" a tug scuttled at the Norfok Navy Yard in 1861. The kettle was liberated by a Confederate unit. Two soldiers, a pair of brothers, related to Ms. Elmore, whose last name was Mays or Mayes of this unit by carried it home where later it was used as a   still for the use of making moonshine. Ms. Elmore sold the item to Mike in order to buy medication she needed. The handles are gone; hole cut in bottom for use in the still.
